Chapter 4
by Praise Malinga
Prophecy is a manifestation gift that speaks words that change things, edifying, exhortation, and comforting. As it is written in 1 Corinthians 14:3, "But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort." Prophecy can be what God told you to say and you repeat it to a person or to a situation, like He told Ezekiel in the Valley of dried bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14).
Sometimes, prophecy can be initiated by the believer, but it still ought to be edifying, exhortation, and comforting. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "Let all things be done unto edifying" (1 Corinthians 14:26). Prophecy is a powerful gift that can bring healing, restoration, and hope to those who receive it.
It's essential to note that prophecy should be tested, as it is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21, "Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."
Characteristics of Prophecy
- Edifying: Prophecy builds up and strengthens the body of Christ. It's about constructing, encouraging, and developing individuals in their walk with God. Edifying prophecy gives people a sense of purpose, direction, and identity in Christ. It helps them understand their position in the body of Christ and how they fit into God's plan.
- Exhortation: Prophecy encourages and urges others to follow God. It's a call to action, stirring people up to pursue God, trust Him, and obey His Word. Exhortation prophecy motivates and inspires individuals to press on, even in the face of challenges and difficulties. It says, "Keep going, you're on the right track, don't give up!"
- Comfort: Prophecy brings comfort and hope to those who receive it. It's a word of solace, peace, and reassurance, reminding people that God is with them and working everything out for their good. Comforting prophecy calms troubled hearts, soothes emotional pain, and brings peace in the midst of uncertainty.
When to deliver it?
Prophecy should be delivered in love, with sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, and with the goal of edifying, exhorting, and comforting others. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "Let all things be done unto edifying" (1 Corinthians 14:26).
